Roblox Username Checker

Type a name to see if it is free on Roblox. The answer comes straight from Roblox's own username validator, so you get available, taken, or the exact rule the name breaks.

Free, no login. Usernames only, not display names.

How This Checker Works

Roblox runs a username validator on its own servers that answers one question: can this name be registered right now? This checker sends your name to that validator and shows you its answer.

That matters because most username checkers work by opening a profile page and guessing from what loads. A profile probe can tell you an account exists, but it cannot tell you whether a name breaks a rule or would be blocked by Roblox's filter. The validator answers all three at once: whether the name is in use, whether it follows the naming rules, and whether the filter accepts it.

Your browser cannot call Roblox's validator directly, so the request goes through our server. Roblox only ever sees the name you typed, never your IP address or anything else about you. Results are kept for five minutes so that popular names are not checked over and over, and each visitor can run ten checks a minute. The main WhatsMyName App search works the same way, and our guide on whether WhatsMyName App is safe covers what is stored and what is not.

What Each Result Means

Available

Roblox's username validator accepted the name. No account is using it right now and it passed Roblox's naming rules and text filter. It is not reserved for you, so if you want it, create the account or change your username soon, before someone else does.

Taken

Roblox says the name is already in use. That can be an active player, an old account nobody has opened in years, or a name Roblox keeps out of circulation. Roblox's help center says you cannot use a name belonging to another account, so try a variation instead.

Not allowed

The name breaks one of Roblox's rules, or Roblox's filter rejected it. The message under the result is Roblox's own explanation, so it tells you exactly what to change: too short, too long, a second underscore, a space, or a character outside a to z, 0 to 9 and the underscore.

Couldn't check

Roblox did not answer, answered with something unexpected, or you ran a lot of checks in one minute. The checker never guesses in this case, because telling you a name is free when it is not is the worst mistake it could make. Wait a minute and try again.

If a taken name is one you already use elsewhere and you think someone has copied it, read what to do when someone is using your username, which covers telling impersonation apart from coincidence.

Roblox Username Rules

Roblox usernames are 3 to 20 characters long. They can use the letters a to z in either case, the digits 0 to 9, and a single underscore, which cannot be the first or last character. Spaces, hyphens, dots and every other symbol are rejected. On top of those rules, every name passes through Roblox's text filter, which can refuse a name that follows all of them.

We ran the names below through Roblox's validator on 26 October 2026. The right column is the message Roblox sent back, word for word, and it is the same message this checker shows you.

Name triedRoblox's answer
buildermanUsername is already in use
abUsernames can be 3 to 20 characters long
a_b_cUsernames can have at most one _
_abcUsername can’t start or end with _
hello worldUsername cannot contain spaces
ab-cdOnly a-z, A-Z, 0-9, and _ are allowed

Why Good Names Are Hard to Get

Roblox has been running since 2006, and the obvious names went long ago. When we tested on 26 October 2026, apple, sunset, tiger42, john123456, 12345 and even quietriver were all already in use. Changing the capitals does not help either: BuilderMan and BUILDERMAN both come back taken, because Roblox treats usernames as the same name whatever the case.

Renamed accounts do not free up their old names either. Roblox keeps past usernames on the account and lets the owner switch back to one, so waiting for a taken name to come back is rarely worth it.

Tips for Finding an Available Name

  • Expect plain words and simple word pairs to be gone. Even quietriver was taken in our test, so plan to add something of your own from the start.
  • Use your one underscore in the middle to split two words. It cannot go at the start or end, and you only get one.
  • Use capital letters for readability only. Changing the case of a taken name will not make it available, but capitals make a long name easier to read.
  • Add numbers that mean something to you rather than random ones, so the name is easier to remember and say out loud.
  • Check the name before you spend Robux. Changing an existing username costs Robux every time, so confirm the new name is free and allowed first.
  • Pick a name you would be happy to keep. Your old usernames stay visible in your history after a change, so a rename does not erase them.

Username vs Display Name

Every Roblox account has two names. The username is the unique identifier you log in with, and no two accounts can share one. The display name is how you appear in experiences and on your profile, it does not have to be unique, and Roblox's help center says you can change it for free. A username change, by contrast, costs Robux every time.

That is why this checker only checks usernames. If you just want a different name in game, a display name change may be all you need, and nothing has to be free for it.

Looking for a Player Instead?

This page answers whether a name is free. If you already know a Roblox username and want to see where else that person uses it, the Roblox username search guide explains how to check it against hundreds of other sites at once. Good places to look next are Discord, YouTube and TikTok, and each has its own guide.

It is also a useful check before you settle on a new name, since a name that is free on Roblox can already belong to someone else on the platforms where you would want to use it too. If the name is one you already use, it is worth seeing what a search for it turns up before you tie a new account to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Roblox username checker accurate?

It asks Roblox's own username validator, so the answer is Roblox's, not a guess from a profile page. The one gap is time: a name that is available now can be claimed by someone else a minute later, and results are cached for up to five minutes.

Why does a name show as taken when I can't find the account?

A taken result is Roblox's own answer that the name is in use, even if no active player seems to have it. Many accounts are old and empty, so the account holding the username is easy to miss.

Do old Roblox usernames become available after someone changes their name?

Do not count on it. Roblox's help center says previous usernames stay listed on the account, in its settings, on its profile and in people search, and the owner can switch back to one later. A name only leaves an account for good when the owner submits a right to be forgotten request, and Roblox says those names are then retired and prevented from re-use.

Does the checker work for display names?

No. Display names do not have to be unique on Roblox, so two players can use the same one and there is nothing to check. This tool only checks usernames.

Is it free, and do I need a Roblox account?

It is free and you do not need a Roblox account or any login. The check runs on our server, so Roblox never sees your IP address or anything about you, only the name you typed.

Why do some names say not appropriate for Roblox?

Roblox runs every username through a text filter, and the checker passes its verdict straight through. Roblox does not publish what the filter blocks, so trying a name is the only way to know. If a name is rejected, the fix is a different name.

Can I check if a Roblox username is used on other sites too?

Yes. If you plan to use the same name on Discord, YouTube or TikTok, run it through the main WhatsMyName App search, which checks Roblox and over 700 other platforms in one go. It is the quickest way to see whether your new name is already someone else's identity elsewhere.
