How to Change Your Fortnite Name on PC, Console and Mobile

Changing your Fortnite name is quick, but only once you know which name you are actually changing. Fortnite does not have one username. On PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile, the name Fortnite shows is your Epic Games display name. On PlayStation and Xbox, it is your PSN Online ID or your Xbox gamertag, and changing your Epic name will not touch it.

This guide covers every platform, what it costs, the limits that stop a change from going through, and what a new name does not change.

Quick answer: on PC, Switch or mobile, sign in at epicgames.com, open your account settings and edit your display name. It is free, needs a verified email address, and you can change it once every two weeks. On PlayStation or Xbox, change your Online ID or gamertag through Sony or Microsoft instead.

Which Name Are You Changing?

Start here. A name change that seems not to work is often the right steps done on the wrong account.

Where you play Name Fortnite shows Where to change it Cost
PC or Mac Epic Games display name epicgames.com account settings Free, once every two weeks
Nintendo Switch Epic Games display name epicgames.com, signed in to the Epic account linked to your Nintendo Account Free, once every two weeks
iPhone, iPad or Android Epic Games display name epicgames.com in your phone's browser Free, once every two weeks
PlayStation 4 or 5 PSN Online ID PlayStation settings or the PlayStation website First change free, later changes paid
Xbox One or Series X|S Xbox gamertag Xbox settings or the Xbox website First change free, later changes paid

Epic states it plainly in its help centre: changing your Epic Games display name does not affect your PSN or Xbox names. That is why a console player can change their Epic name, load Fortnite, and see nothing different.

How to Change Your Fortnite Name on PC, Mac, Switch or Mobile

On these platforms your Fortnite name is your Epic Games display name, and you change it on Epic's website rather than inside the game.

  1. Go to epicgames.com in any browser and sign in to the account you play Fortnite on. On a phone, use the mobile browser.
  2. Open your account menu and choose Account to reach your account settings.
  3. Find the Display Name box and edit it.
  4. Type the new name, confirm it, and save your changes.
  5. Restart Fortnite. The new name shows the next time the game loads.

The same display name is used across every Epic game and the Epic Games Launcher, so a change for Fortnite changes it everywhere on that account.

Switch players: sign in at epicgames.com with the same Epic account that is linked to your Nintendo Account. If you sign in to a different Epic account, you will rename that one instead and nothing will change on your Switch.

How to Change Your Fortnite Name on PlayStation

On PS4 and PS5, Fortnite shows your PSN Online ID, so that is what you need to change.

  • On PS5: Settings, then Users and Accounts, then Profile, then Online ID.
  • On PS4: Settings, then Account Management, then Account Information, then Profile, then Online ID.
  • On the web: sign in to your account on the PlayStation website and edit the Online ID in your PSN profile.

Things to know before you pay for a change:

  • The first change is free. When Sony introduced Online ID changes it charged $9.99 for each change after that, or $4.99 for PlayStation Plus members. Prices vary by region and have changed over time, so check the price PlayStation shows you before confirming.
  • Your old ID is held for you. It is reserved to your account rather than released, and you can choose to display it next to your new ID for 30 days so friends can still recognise you. If you change your mind, switching back to your original ID is free.
  • Older games may not cope. Sony warns that some older titles do not handle an ID change cleanly, and PS3 and PS Vita do not support it at all.

More on how PlayStation IDs work, including how to search one, is in our PlayStation username guide.

How to Change Your Fortnite Name on Xbox

On Xbox, Fortnite shows your gamertag.

  • On the console: press the Xbox button, go to Profile and system, select your profile, choose My profile, then Customize profile, and select your gamertag to edit it.
  • On the web: sign in to the Xbox website with your Microsoft account and use the change gamertag page.

Your first gamertag change is free, including when Microsoft generated your original gamertag for you. Later changes cost money, typically around $9.99 in the US, with the exact price depending on your region. The new gamertag also appears in every other Xbox game, not just Fortnite. Our Xbox gamertag guide covers how gamertags work in more detail.

Why You Can't Change Your Fortnite Name

If the change will not go through, it is almost always one of these.

  • There is a lock icon on your display name. You changed it within the last two weeks. Epic allows one change every two weeks. Hover over the small info icon next to your current name to see when the last change happened, which tells you when you can change it again.
  • Your email is not verified. Epic requires a verified email address before you can change a display name. Verify it from your account settings, then try again.
  • You changed it, but the game still shows the old name. You are probably on PlayStation or Xbox, where Fortnite uses your console name. Change your Online ID or gamertag instead. On PC, Switch or mobile, restart the game so it loads the new name.
  • You signed in to the wrong account. This is easy to do on Switch and on shared family consoles. Check that the Epic account you edited is the one linked to the console or device you play on.
  • The name is not accepted. Display names must be unique across Epic, so popular names are usually taken, and Epic rejects names that break its naming rules. Try a variation.

What Changing Your Fortnite Name Does Not Change

A new display name is cosmetic. It replaces the name people see, and very little else.

  • Your account stays the same. Your Epic account ID is permanent, so your skins, purchases and progress stay exactly where they are.
  • Stat trackers follow the new name. Public Fortnite trackers index players by their current display name, so they show the new name rather than a list of old ones.
  • Your other accounts keep the old handle. Changing your Fortnite name does nothing to your Twitch channel, Discord username, YouTube handle or TikTok. If you used the same handle everywhere, it is still out there on all of them.
  • Old clips and screenshots do not update. Anything you or other people recorded or posted under the old name keeps showing it.

That last pair matters if you are changing your name for privacy, for example because an old handle is linked to your real name. The Fortnite change is the easy part. The more useful step is finding everywhere else the old handle still exists. You can search your old username across 730 sites in one go, and our guide on how to search yourself online covers what to do with what you find.

Before You Pick a New Name

  • You are stuck with it for two weeks. Test a name in your head, say it out loud, and check the spelling before you save it.
  • Think about consistency. If you stream or post clips, a name that matches your Twitch, YouTube and TikTok handles makes you easier to find. Check whether the new name is free on those platforms before you commit to it on Epic.
  • Console players get two names. If you play on both PC and PlayStation or Xbox, your friends may see two different names. Changing both to match costs nothing on Epic, but may cost money on the console side.

To see where a name is already registered, search it on WhatsMyName App. For Fortnite itself, our Fortnite username guide explains what a result there does and does not tell you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my Fortnite name for free?

Yes on PC, Mac, Nintendo Switch and mobile, where your Fortnite name is your Epic display name and changes are free. On PlayStation and Xbox the first change of your Online ID or gamertag is free and later changes cost money.

How often can I change my Fortnite name?

Once every two weeks for your Epic display name. A lock icon next to the name means the two weeks are not up yet.

Why does my Fortnite name show differently on PlayStation or Xbox?

Because on those consoles Fortnite uses your PSN Online ID or Xbox gamertag, not your Epic display name. Changing your Epic name does not change your console name.

Can I change my Fortnite name inside the game?

Not from Fortnite's own settings. On PC, Switch and mobile you change it on the Epic Games website. On PlayStation and Xbox you change it in the console's own settings or website.

Will I lose my skins or progress if I change my name?

No. The name sits on top of your account, and your Epic account ID never changes, so everything you own stays on the account.

Can people still find my old Fortnite name?

Public Fortnite stat trackers show your current display name, not past ones. But if you used the same handle on other sites, such as Twitch, Discord or YouTube, it is still visible there until you change it on each one.

Why can't I change my Fortnite display name?

The usual reasons are that you changed it in the last two weeks, your email address is not verified, or you are on a console where Fortnite uses your PSN or Xbox name instead.
