How to Find Someone on Steam (By Name, Code or Profile Link)
Find someone on Steam by profile name, friend code, custom URL or SteamID, and why email and account name searches fail. Steam search tested in November 2026.

Quick answer: the fastest way to find someone on Steam is their profile link. If you only know their name, use Steam's user search, but expect dozens of lookalikes, because Steam profile names are not unique. What works depends on what you already know:
- You have their profile link or custom URL: go straight to
steamcommunity.com/id/followed by the custom URL. - You know their profile name: search it at
steamcommunity.com/search/usersand compare the results. - You can message them somewhere else: ask for their friend code or a Quick Invite link. It is the surest method, because they send it to you.
- You know a handle they use on other sites: check whether it is also their Steam custom URL.
There is no way to find someone on Steam by email address or by the account name they sign in with. Steam does not offer either search.
Which Steam name do you actually know?
Steam accounts have several names, and searching the wrong one is a common reason a search fails.
| What it is | Unique? | Can you search it? | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profile name | The name shown on the profile, in friends lists and in many games | No | Yes, in Steam's user search |
| Custom URL | The readable part of the profile link, as in steamcommunity.com/id/nightowl | Yes | Yes, by going to the link directly |
| SteamID | A permanent 17 digit number, as in steamcommunity.com/profiles/7656119... | Yes | Yes, by going to the link directly |
| Account name | The name used to sign in | Yes | No, it is never shown to other people |
The profile name is the one people usually mean, and it is the weakest of the four, because anyone can copy it and its owner can change it at any time. The custom URL and the SteamID point to exactly one account. Our guide to changing a Steam username explains how each one works in more detail.
Method 1: Go straight to their profile link
If someone has shared their Steam link, or you know their custom URL, skip search entirely.
- Type
steamcommunity.com/id/followed by the custom URL into your browser. - If you have a long number instead, type
steamcommunity.com/profiles/followed by that number. Accounts without a custom URL only have this kind of link. - If Steam says the profile could not be found, check the spelling, then see why you can't find someone, further down.
You do not need a Steam account or to be signed in to open a profile. What you see depends on the person's privacy settings, covered below.
Method 2: Search their profile name
Steam's community search finds accounts by profile name. It works on the website at steamcommunity.com/search/users, and in the Steam app from Friends, then Add a Friend, which also has a search box.
- Type the name they use and run the search.
- Each result shows an avatar and a profile name, and some also show a custom URL.
- Open the likely matches and compare them before you add anyone.
Expect a crowd. We tested this in November 2026 on a well-known account: its current profile name returned 239 accounts, and the account itself was not on the first page. A search for its exact custom URL returned 47 accounts, and it was not among them. Steam's search matches profile names, so it is a poor way to find a custom URL. Type the link directly instead (Method 1).
To tell the right account from a copy, compare:
- The avatar and Steam level. Check they match what you remember of the person's account.
- Games and groups. On a public profile, the games someone plays and the groups they joined are good confirmation.
- Mutual friends. If you share friends, check whether the account is in their friends list.
- Previous names. On a public profile, a small arrow next to the profile name opens a list of names the account used before, unless the owner has cleared it. That helps when someone renamed themselves since you last played together.
Method 3: Ask for their friend code or a Quick Invite link
If you can reach the person on Discord, by text or in person, this is the most reliable method, because it never matches the wrong account.
Friend code: in the Steam app, go to Friends, then Add a Friend. Your friend code is shown on that page. They read theirs to you, and you type it into the box on the same page.
Quick Invite link: on the same page, they can copy a link under Or send a Quick Invite and send it to you. Opening it adds you as friends, though some guides describe a confirmation step first. Guides consistently describe these links as working once and expiring after 30 days, and the page has an option to generate a new one.
Quick Invite links are also the way round Steam's $5 rule, explained below.
Method 4: Check their handles from other platforms
Many gamers use the same handle everywhere, and a Steam custom URL is often that handle.
- Run every handle you know through WhatsMyName App. It checks hundreds of sites at once, Steam custom URLs included, for free and without an account.
- If Steam comes back as found, the link opens that profile. A not found result only means no account uses that text as its custom URL. The person may still have a Steam account without one.
- Try close variations too: an underscore instead of a hyphen, a number at the end, or a handle they used years ago.
Our Steam user search guide explains what the Steam check matches and how to read the result.
Method 5: Find their Steam through their other accounts
People often link their Steam profile somewhere else. Check:
- Discord: Discord lets users connect their Steam account and choose to show it on their profile. See how to find someone on Discord.
- Twitch and YouTube: streamers sometimes link their Steam profile in channel panels or descriptions.
- Bios and link pages: an Instagram or X bio, a Linktree, or a personal website.
- Reddit and forums: players share their profile links in trading and looking-for-group threads. See how to find someone on Reddit.
Once you find a Steam profile, it can lead the other way too. Profiles sometimes name the person's Discord, Twitch or YouTube in the summary.
Method 6: Find someone you played a game with
If you met someone in a match, Steam may have kept a record. Steam's Recently Played With list shows players from recent games, grouped by game. It sits with your friends list in the Steam app, and in many games you can also reach it through the overlay with Shift+Tab.
It does not work for every game, because each game has to report its players to Steam, and some do not. The exact menu has moved between Steam versions, so if you cannot see it, look under your friends list first.
Can you find someone on Steam by email or account name?
No. Steam has no lookup by email, and it never shows the account name people sign in with. A suggestion thread on the Steam Community forums asks Valve to allow searching by email or account name, and the feature does not exist.
Steam's help pages say an account name "can not be changed, even by Steam Support staff members", and it stays private. If you only know someone's email, your options are the other methods here: ask them, or find a handle they use elsewhere.
Viewing a profile without adding them
You can open any Steam profile without sending a friend request. How much you see depends on its privacy setting, which Steam offers in three states: Public, Friends Only and Private.
- Public: the profile page is visible to everyone. Game details, the friends list and the inventory have separate settings, so a public profile can still hide some of them.
- Friends Only or Private: people who are not friends do not see the profile's details. When we checked Friends Only profiles signed out, Steam labelled them "This profile is private." but still showed the profile name and avatar, and the SteamID was still available.
So even a hidden profile confirms the account exists. Its games and friends stay hidden unless you are friends.
Steam does not show anyone a list of who viewed their profile. Guides consistently say Steam has no profile visitor list, so opening a profile does not tell the owner you looked.
Why you can't find someone on Steam
If nothing above works, one of these is usually the reason:
- They changed their profile name. Profile names can change at any time, as often as the owner likes. Search the old name and check the previous names list on likely matches.
- They changed or removed their custom URL. An old link stops working once the owner changes it. If they removed it, their profile only has a
steamcommunity.com/profiles/link with their SteamID. - You searched their account name. Account names are never searchable.
- The name is common. A popular profile name can match hundreds of accounts. Use a friend code or a link instead.
- You cannot send the request. Limited accounts, usually new ones that have not spent $5, can't send friend requests, even when they have found the right person.
Steam's $5 rule
Steam limits some features on accounts that have not made at least $5.00 USD in total Steam purchases, or the equivalent in local currency. Steam's help page on limited accounts says they cannot send friend invites, but they can still accept invites from other people and use Quick Invite links. Gifts received from friends do not count toward the $5.
If your account is limited, have the other person send you a request or a Quick Invite link. If both accounts are limited, either of you can send the other a Quick Invite link.
How to find someone's SteamID
A SteamID is the permanent 17 digit number behind every account. It does not change when the profile name or custom URL does, so it is the safest way to keep track of an account.
- If the profile has no custom URL: the number is already in the link, after
steamcommunity.com/profiles/. - If it has a custom URL: SteamID finder sites, such as steamid.io, turn a custom URL into the SteamID.
A SteamID is public by design. It lets people find a profile, not sign in to it.
Finding your own lost Steam account
If the account you are looking for is yours:
- Forgot the account name: use the help option on Steam's sign-in screen for a forgotten account name or password, and enter the email address or phone number on the account. Steam sends a code there before it shows the account. Old emails from Steam may also mention your account name.
- Forgot your custom URL or SteamID: sign in, open your profile and look at the link in your browser's address bar.
- An old account under a handle you used years ago: run that handle through WhatsMyName App to see whether it is still a Steam custom URL, and where else it is still registered.
If you are cleaning up old accounts, see our guide to searching yourself online.
Use this responsibly
Finding a public profile is normal and legal. What you do next matters.
- Send a friend request and let the person decide. Do not create new accounts to get round a block or a declined request.
- If someone is harassing you, block and report them through Steam rather than tracking them down yourself.
- If someone is pretending to be you, see what to do when someone is using your username.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find someone on Steam by name?
Search their profile name at steamcommunity.com/search/users, or in the Steam app under Friends, then Add a Friend. Profile names are not unique, so compare the avatar, games and mutual friends before you add anyone. If you know their custom URL, go to steamcommunity.com/id/ followed by it instead.
Can I find someone on Steam by email?
No. Steam has no search by email address, and it never shows email addresses on profiles.
What is the $5 rule on Steam?
Accounts that have not made at least $5.00 USD in total Steam purchases are limited. They cannot send friend invites, but they can accept invites and use Quick Invite links. Gifts from friends do not count toward the $5.
Can someone see if I look at their Steam profile?
No. Steam has no list of who viewed a profile, so the owner is not told when you open it.
Is a Steam ID public?
Yes. The 17 digit SteamID appears in the link of any profile without a custom URL, and SteamID finder sites can look it up from a custom URL. It identifies the account but cannot be used to sign in.
How do I find my friend's ID on Steam?
Open their profile. If the link reads steamcommunity.com/profiles/ followed by a long number, that number is their SteamID. If it shows a custom URL instead, paste the link into a SteamID finder such as steamid.io.
Can I see a private Steam profile?
Not in full. Signed out, a Friends Only profile shows its profile name and avatar with the note "This profile is private." Its games, friends and activity stay hidden unless you are friends.
