Discord User Search Without ID: 6 Ways to Find Someone
No user ID? Find someone on Discord by username or display name, through shared servers, or via their other accounts. Free methods that work in 2026.

Quick answer: Discord has no global search for people. To find someone without their user ID, you have three options:
You know their exact username: send a friend request by username.
You only know their display name: search for them inside a server you share with them.
Neither works: find their Discord through their other accounts, like Twitch, Steam, Reddit or a Linktree.
Username vs display name: get this right first
Most failed Discord searches come from mixing these two up.
Username: unique, lowercase, 2–32 characters, like
pixelfox.dev. Only one account can have it. This is what friend requests use.Display name: the bigger name shown in chats, like "Pixel Fox 🦊". It doesn't have to be unique, so many people can share it.
Server nickname: a different name a person can set in each server. It's another reason the name you see may not be their username.
Discord moved to this system in 2023. The old Name#1234 tags are gone. If someone gives you a name with a # and four numbers, it's an old tag, and their username today is probably different.
To see someone's real username: click their name or avatar in any chat. The username appears under the display name on their profile card.
Method 1: Add them by exact username
If you know the username, this is the quickest way.
On desktop or in your browser:
Click the Discord logo in the top-left corner.
Open the Friends tab and click Add Friend.
Type the exact username and click Send Friend Request.
On mobile:
Tap the chat bubble in the top-left corner.
Tap Add Friends, then Add by Username.
Type the exact username and tap Send Friend Request.
Limits:
It only works with the exact username. Display names won't work.
The person can turn off friend requests from strangers. If the request fails, that doesn't mean the account doesn't exist.
You only see their full profile once they accept, or if you share a server.
Method 2: Search by display name inside a server you share
If you're in the same server, you can find someone by display name or nickname.
Use the server search:
Open the server and click the search bar at the top.
Type
from:and start typing their name.Discord suggests matching members. Select one to see their messages and open their profile.
Use the member list:
On desktop, open the member list on the right and scroll or search it.
On mobile, open the channel and tap the members icon. Where it sits depends on your app version.
In big servers, the list may only show members who are online right now. Server search is more reliable there.
Use the Quick Switcher (desktop):
Press Ctrl + K (or Cmd + K on Mac) and type
@followed by the name.It searches people in your DMs, your friends list and the servers you share.
Method 3: Check mutual servers and friends
Already found the person's profile, or someone close to them? Click their profile and check Mutual Servers and Mutual Friends.
A mutual server is a place where you can use Method 2.
A mutual friend can confirm the account or introduce you.
This is also an easy way to check that an account claiming to be someone you know really is them: a real friend usually shares servers or friends with you.
Method 4: Search their username across other platforms
People often use the same handle everywhere. If you know a username from Twitch, Steam, Reddit or an old gaming account, it's often their Discord username too, or close to it.
Run the username through WhatsMyName App. It checks 732 platforms at once, for free.
Open the accounts it finds and look for a Discord username in bios, panels or links.
Try the username (and close variations) in Add Friend (Method 1).
You can also check a username on Discord's own page with our Discord username search.
Method 5: Find their Discord through other platforms
Many people publish their Discord, usually in these places:
Twitch: panels under the stream and the "About" section, often with a Discord server invite.
Steam: profile summary and comments.
Reddit: bio, and posts in gaming subreddits ("add me on Discord").
GitHub: profile README and bio.
X, Instagram, TikTok: bio links.
Linktree and similar: a "Discord" button with an invite or username.
A server invite won't show their username, but joining their server puts you in a shared server, so Method 2 works.
Google tip: search their known name or handle in quotes with the word discord, like "pixelfox" discord. Forum posts, Steam comments and Reddit threads often mention a Discord username.
This works the other way too. Discord profiles can show Connections: linked Twitch, Steam, Spotify, X, Reddit, GitHub and YouTube accounts. Once you find someone's Discord, their other accounts are often one click away.
Method 6: If you do get their user ID
A user ID is a long number, like 123456789012345678. To copy one:
Go to User Settings → Advanced and turn on Developer Mode.
Right-click a user (long-press on mobile) and select Copy User ID.
To open a profile from an ID, paste discord.com/users/ followed by the ID into your browser while logged in to Discord.
Useful for scam checks: every Discord ID includes the date the account was created. ID lookup sites can show that date from the ID alone. A brand-new account claiming to be an old friend, a trader or a "Discord staff" member is a red flag.
Stay safe: a lookup tool should only ever need the ID. Never paste your password, your account token or any code into a site or app that claims it can "find any Discord user". That's a common way accounts get stolen.
Why you can't search all of Discord
Discord intentionally has no public people directory. You can't search every user by display name, location or real name, and no outside tool can do it legitimately either.
Sites that claim they can usually do one of three things:
Show only public data from a user ID you already have
Rely on data scraped from servers, which breaks Discord's terms
Try to get your login
Stick to the methods above.
Checking whether a Discord account is real
If a stranger or a "friend" messages you, check them before trusting them:
Check mutual servers and friends (Method 3). A real friend usually shares some.
Check the account age from the user ID (Method 6). Brand-new accounts are a warning sign.
Check the username across platforms with WhatsMyName App. A real person usually has some history elsewhere.
Watch for common scams: "I accidentally reported your account", free Nitro links and fake "staff" messages. Discord staff won't DM you asking for your password or a payment.
If someone is pretending to be you, see how to find fake accounts using your name.
Frequently asked questions
Can you search Discord users by display name?
Only inside servers you share with them, using the server search (from:) or the member list. Discord doesn't support a global display-name search, and friend requests need the exact username.
Can I find someone on Discord without their username or ID?
Yes, if they've posted their Discord elsewhere (Twitch panels, Steam, Reddit, social bios) or you share a server with them. If neither is true, there's no reliable way, by design.
How do I find a Discord username from a display name?
Find a message from that person in a shared server and click their name. The profile card shows their unique username under the display name.
Does Discord tell someone you looked at their profile?
No. Discord doesn't show who viewed your profile. Sending a friend request does notify them.
Can I find someone's Discord with their email or phone number?
You can't look someone up by email. Discord's Find Your Friends feature on mobile can match people in your phone contacts, but only if they've made their account discoverable by phone number. Many people leave that off, so don't count on it.
Why can't I find someone with their old Name#1234 tag?
Discord replaced those tags with unique usernames in 2023, so the old tag no longer works for friend requests. Ask them for their current username, or check their other platforms (Method 5).
